Getting Back On Track After Office 07

I said yesterday that I would probably have to reformat to repair the system damage that Office 2007 caused me. I was partially right. Before I continue, I don't fault Microsoft that much. It was a beta and you can expect to use a beta at your own risk. And of course most of us are familiar with Microsoft products that seem to be betas after their release date (Win95, Win ME, etc). I do appreciate them making Office and Vista available in public betas. It is smart. They give you approximately 7 or 8 months to get used to and learn to depend on their new software, then the release happens and you either have to pay for it or go back to the way things were. I think it's a brilliant strategy. I just don't see myself playing along.

Before I put the Office beta on, I did create a system restore point. I tried to return to it, but it was no good. This morning, I got the idea to try the system restore point before the pre-Office point. This time it actually worked. Office 2003 still won't run, but at least 07 isn't in my add/remove programs list and I can launch programs without the Office 2007 installer popping up. I've never understood what that was about, except that Office 2007 does include search functions and some partially uninstalled service was probably looking for the program it needed to monitor the program I was bringing up. At least my system is more or less back to normal. In the interim, rather than using Outlook I have gotten used to using gmail directly for my email. I do like it. If only Google calendar would sync with a Pocket PC, I really wouldn't need Outlook for anything.
