One of my largest pet peeves with RSS feeds are from those blogs that only provide partial feeds. There are a lot of blogs out there; far too many to keep track of in bookmarks and especially too many to remember. I’ve found and forgotten many blogs over the years, until I discovered Google Reader. Thanks to Google Reader (or other RSS clients available), I can subscribe to any blog that I like and never have to forget it. I’ve found some decent blogs and subscribed, only to find that full posts are not provided. To this point, I really haven’t found any reason why bloggers can’t provide full posts. I personally hate reading excerpts. In most cases, if I come across an excerpt in Google Reader, I’ll just skip over the post unless for some reason it really catches my interest. Excerpted feeds are especially annoying when I’m reading on a mobile device like my Pocket PC.
I have tried to look at this from another point of view. I’ve tried to consider why an excerpted post would be convenient to either the blogger or the reader, but at this point, I can’t. I prefer full posts, and in the spirit of the “Golden Rule,” I provide them as well. If you’re going to go to the trouble of subscribing to my feed, I’ll make it as easy for you to read my posts as I possibly can.
