I’ve had people ask me to put up pictures for some time now. I’m afraid to put them on Facebook because they claim to own your content. I doubt silly pictures of my kids could be commercialized by Facebook, but still, just because the possibility exists I’m hesitant to take the chance. I know FaceBook just reverted to an older Terms of Service, but still…
In October, I went to the Food and Wine show in Atlantic City with my wife and my father-in-law. My mother-in-law stayed behind to watch the boys. My sister-in-law had tickets that she never got to use, so we went back on Sunday (we used our tickets on Saturday) with the boys.
My wife had tickets to Tyler Florence’s show. Duff, from Ace of Cakes, also had a show, but Christina didn’t want to spend the money on tickets for two shows, so she stood at the back peeking through the curtain to watch Duff. Obviously, making a cake was too complicated for a one hour show, so he mostly talked and answered questions. I remember it being amusing, but Christina was far more into it than I was. When it came time for Tyler’s show, we got in line and sat down. He made fish and chips. Oh, that sounded so good. As soon as his show ended, Christina went flying to get in line for autographs. Honestly, the only time I’ve EVER seen her move that fast involved a crash in another room followed by one of the boys crying. I couldn’t keep up. I ended up going out of the show area and explaining my situation to the security guard. I asked if, when my wife got up to the table, could I go in with her. I asked politely. Other people trying to sneak in verbally abused the guard, or people asking him where one or another display was would treat him like he was stupid. I was nice and respectful, and I got what I needed.
Christina was in line for a long time. When she finally got up to the table, the guard let me go in. When I thanked him, he acted like nobody had ever done such a thing before. I’ve learned over the years that no matter where you are, security guards can be your best friends and it’s best to be nice to them.
I have to admit, I was ashamed to have confused Tyler Florence with another Food Network host, but Christina is the Food Network nut. I’d love to chance to have a few drinks with Alton Brown, but I don’t keep up with that network like she does. We got his autograph on both of his new books. I asked him how he liked his iPhone, which was sitting on the table. He said he loves it.
When we came back the next day, we noticed that Tyler’s show had just ended and only a few people were in line for autographs. Christina decided to try to get a family picture. Somehow, Tyler and his assistants remembered us. I guess because we commented that his children are just a little closer together in age than ours. Ours are 54 weeks apart. I think his are closer. In any case, here is our family picture with Tyler Florence. It was one of Christina’s happiest days:
