I’ve written several posts about how the words we use and the way we say them can cause seriously negative consequences for us. I’m just as guilty as anybody of this, which is scary because I try to be conscious of it.
My wife and I have had a few yard sales over the years. We’ve also been to a lot. My wife loves yard sale shopping. I’m sure that within the next month, when yard sales start back up, she’ll expect me to get up on Saturday and start driving her around. I’ll do everything in my power to get out of it, including offering to keep both kids at home with me.
You know how yard sales go. You take a bunch of excess stuff from your house outside and slap a price on it. It’s all stuff that you don’t need anymore. You haven’t needed it in years, and it’s still in decent enough condition that you don’t want to throw it away, so you figure it might be worth a low price to somebody else.
When holding a yard sale, it never fails that some woman will ask a question about something that you have for sale. You’ll answer her question, and she puts it back and says “That’s OK. I’m just looking for things I can resell on Ebay.”
I have absolutely nothing against reselling on Ebay. My wife used to do very well at it. One time, she found a maternity shirt on sale for $3, and she sold it on Ebay for $18. If she could have only kept that up… I just think it’s completely tactless to go around to yard sales announcing that you purposely intend to buy something that somebody is selling for the purpose of making a profit on Ebay. Again, actually doing it is no problem; I only have a problem with people running their mouths about it. Here are a few reasons why:
- For one, if any of the junk in our yard was worth money on Ebay, chances are we would have already sold it.
- Even if we’re getting rid of something, we may have an emotional attachment to it.
I guess that’s all. The only thing I’m saying in this post is, if you’re going to hit yard sales in the hopes of selling junk on Ebay for a profit, just keep that bit of information to yourself. It’s kind of like when you’re looking at houses and you make rude comments about the carpeting with the sellers in ear shot. Even if you’re right, it’s still wrong.
